History: Tramp Art evolved from the European tradition of decorative woodcarving that European immigrants brought to the United States. Inspired by the easy availability of wooden cigar boxes, this art form emerged in the 1850s and experienced a surge in popularity in the 1870s. It reached the height of its popularity during the Great Depression and then declined as cigarettes became popular and ultimately went out of fashion due to the resulting lack of available cigar boxes.

Tramp Art flourished most in the United States, but was also present in European countries such as Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland.
